Chapter 12 of 13
Troubleshooting
The permission disappeared after an update
macOS ties the Accessibility permission to the app's signature. After an update, the switch in System Settings can still look on while Lattika reports Not granted, and the menu starts with Grant Accessibility Access….
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility.
- Select Lattika and remove it with the − button.
- Click +, choose Lattika in Applications, and make sure its switch is on.
- Lattika notices within a second. If not, quit and reopen it.
The same happens if two copies of Lattika exist, for example one in Applications and one still in the Downloads folder. Keep only the one in Applications.
Apps that do not resize
Lattika asks an app to move and resize its window; the app decides what to accept.
- Minimum sizes. Most apps refuse to go below a certain size. The window moves into the zone but stays larger than it. Use a bigger zone or a layout with fewer zones.
- Fixed-size windows. Some utilities cannot be resized at all. The window moves to the zone's corner and keeps its size.
- Apps that restore their own frame. Some apps set their window's position a moment after it opens or after it was moved, undoing Lattika's placement. Snap again once the app has settled, or use a rule with Apply Rules Now.
Lattika tries twice, in two different orders, before giving up. Known cases are collected in COMPAT.md in the repository.
Electron and Java apps
Apps built with Electron (many chat, note and editor apps) and Java (IDEs and similar) report their windows to macOS a little differently.
- Electron apps sometimes apply a size only on the second try. Lattika already retries; if a window still ends up the wrong size, snap it again.
- Java apps announce new windows late, so placement of a new window may be missed. Snap the window by hand or run Apply Rules Now.
- Both kinds usually have large minimum window sizes.
Stage Manager
Lattika does not know about Stage Manager. Snapping the active window works, but Stage Manager keeps its own arrangement and may move windows again when you switch between them. Results vary; turning Stage Manager off gives predictable results.
Full-screen apps and Spaces
A window in full screen cannot be moved. Take the app out of full screen first.
Layouts belong to displays, not to Spaces. The same layout applies in every Space on a display. Windows in other Spaces can be moved by Restore Windows to Zones and by workspaces; they stay in their own Space.
A layout is assigned to a display that is no longer there
Assignments, rules and workspaces that mention a display stay saved while it is disconnected. They do nothing until the display is attached again at the same size.
- The editor lists only attached displays, so the stale assignment is not shown. It does no harm.
- A rule pointing at the display shows missing display in the rules list. Change the rule's display to Display the window appears on or to an attached display.
- A workspace saved with the display lists it as a display that is not attached. Windows that were on it are skipped. Use Update with Current Windows to resave the workspace with the displays you have now.
Shortcuts stop working
Another app registered the same combination, or macOS now reserves it. Record a different one in Settings › Shortcuts.
Lattika does not start at login
Turn on Settings › General › Launch at login. If it is on and Lattika still does not start, check System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions and allow Lattika there.
Where the data is
Everything Lattika saves is in ~/Library/Application Support/Lattika/, as plain JSON:
| File | Contents |
|---|---|
layouts.json | Layouts, the default layout, and which layout each display uses |
rules.json | Rules |
workspaces.json | Workspaces |
memory.json | Window memory |
Settings choices, such as the drag keys, colours, excluded apps and keyboard shortcuts, are in the app's preferences, ~/Library/Preferences/ar.com.indiesoftware.lattika.plist. The trial start and the license are in the macOS Keychain.
Resetting all data
- Quit Lattika.
- Delete the folder
~/Library/Application Support/Lattika/. To keep your layouts and only forget window placements, delete justmemory.json. To reset the settings as well, open Terminal and run:
defaults delete ar.com.indiesoftware.lattika- Open Lattika again. It starts with the six starter layouts and shows the welcome window.
The trial start date and the license are not touched by this. Deactivate a license from Settings › License before giving a Mac away.
Collecting logs for support
Lattika writes to the system log. To get the last ten minutes, run in Terminal:
log show --predicate 'subsystem == "ar.com.indiesoftware.lattika"' --last 10m --style compact
Attach the output to your message to support, together with the macOS version and the name of the app that misbehaves. The log contains window titles and sizes but no window contents.
